How to get to Dirk Hartog Island

The Island Barge “Hartog Explorer”
A landing barge is available to transfer 4WD vehicles from Steep Point to Dirk Hartog Island. Travelling to the island via vehicle barge is a popular method of transport, giving you the freedom to explore the islands natural wonders at your own pace. We recommend that you have some experience in 4WDing in soft sand. There is a limit of 20 vehicles allowed camping on the island at any one time in the National Park. The landing barge carries one vehicle and a trailer at a time and takes approximately 15 minutes to cross the waters of South Passage. The combined maximum length of your 4WD & trailer must not exceed 10.6m. Trucks are not allowed due to height & size.
Bookings are essential.
The barge operates ‘on demand’ from Shelter Bay, Steep Point. (Operates: 7am – 9am with prior bookings, extended operating hours are released during school holidays)
